A painful story of homosexuality

GOMA, Congo — It was around 11 p.m. when armed men burst into Kazungu Ziwa’s hut, put a machete to his throat and yanked down his pants. Mr. Ziwa is a tiny man, about four feet, six inches tall. He tried to fight back, but said he was quickly beaten down.

“Then they raped me,” he said. “It was horrible, physically. I was dizzy. My thoughts just left me.”

For years, the thickly forested hills and clear, deep lakes of eastern Congo have been a reservoir of atrocities. Now, it seems, there is another growing problem: men raping men.

According to Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, United Nations officials and several Congolese aid organizations, the number of men who have been raped has risen sharply in recent months, a consequence of joint Congo-Rwanda military operations against rebels that have uncapped an appalling level of violence against civilians.

Aid workers struggle to explain the sudden spike in male rape cases. The best answer, they say, is that the sexual violence against men is yet another way for armed groups to humiliate and demoralize Congolese communities into submission.

The United Nations already considers eastern Congo the rape capital of the world, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to hear from survivors on her visit to the country next week. Hundreds of thousands of women have been sexually assaulted by the various warring militias haunting these hills, and right now this area is going through one of its bloodiest periods in years.

The joint military operations that began in Januarybetween Rwanda and Congo, David and Goliath neighbors who were recently bitter enemies, were supposed to end the murderous rebel problem along the border and usher in a new epoch of cooperation and peace. Hopes soared afterthe quick capture of a renegade general who had routed government troops and threatened to march across the country.

But aid organizations say that the military maneuvers have provoked horrific revenge attacks, with more than 500,000 people driven from their homes, dozens of villages burned and hundreds of villagers massacred, including toddlers thrown into open fires.

And it is not just the rebels being blamed. According to human rights groups, soldiers from the Congolese Army are executing civilians, raping women and conscripting villagers to lug their food, ammunition and gear into the jungle. It is often a death march through one of Africa’s lushest, most stunning tropical landscapes, which has also been the scene of a devastatingly complicated war for more than a decade.

“From a humanitarian and human rights perspective, the joint operations are disastrous,” said Anneke Van Woudenberg, a researcher for Human Rights Watch.

The male rape cases span several hundred miles and possibly include hundreds of victims. The American Bar Association, which runs a sexual violence legal clinic in Goma, said that more than 10 percent of its cases in June were men.

Brandi Walker, an aid worker at Panzi hospital in nearby Bukavu, said, “Everywhere we go, people say men are getting raped, too.”

But nobody knows the exact number. Men here, like anywhere, are reluctant to come forward. Several who did said they instantly became castaways in their villages, lonely, ridiculed figures, derisively referred to as “bush wives.”

Since being raped several weeks ago, Mr. Ziwa, 53, has not shown much interest in practicing animal medicine, his trade for years. He limps around (his left leg was crushed in the attack) in a soiled white lab coat with “veterinaire” printed on it in red pen, carrying a few biscuit-size pills for dogs and sheep.

“Just thinking about what happened to me makes me tired,” he said.

The same is true for Tupapo Mukuli, who said he was pinned down on his stomach and gang-raped in his cassava patch seven months ago. Mr. Mukuli is now the lone man in the rape ward at Panzi hospital, which is filled with hundreds of women recovering from rape-related injuries. Many knit clothes and weave baskets to make a little money while their bodies heal.

But Mr. Mukuli is left out.

“I don’t know how to make baskets,” he said. So he spends his days sitting on a bench, by himself.

The male rape cases are still just a fraction of those against women. But for the men involved, aid workers say, it is even harder to bounce back.

“Men’s identity is so connected to power and control,” Ms. Walker said.

And in a place where homosexuality is so taboo, the rapes carry an extra dose of shame.

“I’m laughed at,” Mr. Mukuli said. “The people in my village say: ‘You’re no longer a man. Those men in the bush made you their wife.’ ”

Aid workers here say the humiliation is often so severe that male rape victims come forward only if they have urgent health problems, like stomach swelling or continuous bleeding. Sometimes even that is not enough. Ms. Van Woudenberg said that two men whose penises were cinched with rope died a few days later because they were too embarrassed to seek help. Castrations also seem to be increasing, with more butchered men showing up at major hospitals.

Last year, Congo’s rape epidemic appeared to be easing a bit, with fewer cases reported and some rapists jailed. But today, it seems like that thin veneer of law and order has been stripped away. The way villagers describe it, it is open season on civilians.

Muhindo Mwamurabagiro, a tall, graceful woman with long, strong arms, explained how she was walking to the market with friends when they were suddenly surrounded by a group of naked men.

“They grabbed us by the throat and threw us down and raped us,” she said.

Worse, she said, one of the rapists was from her village.

“I yelled, ‘Father of Kondo, I know you, how can you do this?’ ”

One mother said a United Nations peacekeeper raped her 12-year-old boy. A United Nations spokesman said that he had not heard that specific case but that there were indeed a number of new sexual abuse allegations against peacekeepers in Congo and that a team was sent in late July to investigate.

Congolese health professionals are becoming exasperated. Many argue for a political solution, not a military one, and say Western powers should put more pressure onRwanda, which is widely accused of preserving its own stability by keeping the violence on the other side of the border.

“I understand the world feels guilty about what happened in Rwanda in 1994,” said Denis Mukwege, the lead doctor at Panzi Hospital, referring to Rwanda’s genocide. “But shouldn’t the world feel guilty about what’s happening in Congo today?”

The history of 'Gay' expression

Yes, we all know that is a slang but believe it or not it doesn't seem to have any other origin than the word 'gay'. Simply happy, euphoric, and loving the very moment of life. Now that is a very gay picture of a 'gay'. I wish that was true. Suicide is five times more common in gay males than the heterosexual counterparts. That is for the 'gay' being a misleading nomenclature.

Technically, 'gay' has a probable origin in the French word 'gai'. But, before coming to English it did some literary act in German. But, all in all, it meant happiness when it came to English. In fact it was a pretty warm expression for happiness until 1950s and later. But, before that gay was literary perceived by some authors an depicted as a 'prohibited' happiness; something that one was pathologically addicted to. So, soon euphemistically gay was sexualized to mean sexual happiness as in 'forbidden' sense and it was so considered that a 'gay' man meant a lecher (womanizer) , 'gay' woman meant a prostitute and a 'gay' house meant a brothel.

It is not known for certain as to how and why was the word taken to mean a homosexual. Strange though, the first literary instance came with Gertrude Stein's Miss Furr & Miss Skeene (1922) which depicted 'female' homosexual interests as

"They were ...gay, they learned little things that are things in being gay, ... they were quite regularly gay."

Now that was a nasty expression but even here it only meant happiness but, it was taken for a colloquial replacement and soon it was synonymous with homosexual. But, a more important reason for it to be so popular is the pejorative expression 'Queer' which is considered to be derogatory. As the world identified the phenomenon called homosexuality, people world over sympathized and wanted a replacement for 'queer'. Today, even 'gay' is considered to be 'discriminatory'. Phew, we have come a great way from 'derogation' to 'discrimination'.

Happy republic day!

Meet Benjamin Godfre

No, its not a co-incidence that he has 'God' in his name; he truly is a god. Beautiful eyes, sexy looks, ripped abs and the slender and not perfectly heavy arms simply make him look like an angel if not God. Hot as he is, he posed for Timoteo and Tom Cullins. Good god he is one perfect creation of god. And he is unbelievably 22 year old. Just love what your eyes show you. His best looks only for you.

So, I suggest you can stare as long as you can.

Homosexuality for Homophobiacs

Of course, we all know its a big big social taboo out here but, homophobia is different. Have you seen people literally scared to be quoted a homosexual, people who avoid the third gender and transsexuals as if they were creatures from hell or few others who religiously take it upon themselves that homosexuality is a sin and never leave a chance to criticize and ridicule others with diverse sexualities? These people are naturally ignorant and barely educated and may hold high literary achievements but, all in vain.

Heterosexual people may be understood. But, Medical Science also recognizes that many homosexuals are homophobiacs and frankly speaking a big bunch of homophobiacs are not strictly straight. Not strictly straight implies that these people may either be bi-curious, bisexuals or homosexuals or another common breed of humans who have had homosexual encounters once in the past and feel guilty about it.

Little can be done about men and women who are straight. To them its a view, an opinion or about prejudices. But, this article discusses Homosexual Homophobia which is very widespread. Look at this data from Alfred Kinsey's study which found that 46% of male population agreed to have sexual interests and reported to having reacted sexually to both the sexes, 37% voted to have participated in a bisexual activity and 4% agreed to be living as homosexuals or bisexuals openly in the society (as pairs). Further more the study indicated that 13% of human population in spite of ethnicity is homosexual in nature. Now, the funny part: another study was carried out by different methods by sect of scientists and doctors who felt the report exaggerated homosexuality in society and guess what, this study reached the same figures and in fact, at places exceeding the numbers indicated by Alfred Kinsey.

But, the point is, why out of the 37% bisexuals and 13% homosexuals, only 4% live their true identities? The answer lies in the majority which is straight and the responsibility lies with the 43% of bi-curious population that live secret sexual fantasies but, criticize homosexuality in public. Here I leave you with a wonderful thought.

Understanding Sexuality

This is a genuinely vast subject - actually a science in itself. Sex as a concept is the need of all animal species and is needed in order to continue the process of natural selection and evolution. So, no wonder sex is important. But, humans are not just animals and since, they can think, they have an additional component to sex and that is psychological. So sexuality becomes the aggregation of both biological and psychological sexuality. It is worth noting that most animals can't think sex unlike human beings. There urges and sexual cycles are dictated by natural biological clocks, but in humans we have a great gift of controlling, simulating and understanding sex as more than a biological process, it is a social nuance too.

Now we all know that genetically, sex is decided by the father contribution of X or Y chromosome. X leads to be a girl embryo and Y makes a boy embryo. This is the Genetic gender of the embryo. But, what its to be gender is, shall be decided by a number of other factors. As of now the embryo is unisex and not differentiated. It is known that brain cells develop much before the sexual organs of the fetus. So, fetus asks the mother body for an indication as to which brain to develop, a male or a female brain. Interestingly, mother's body is full of estrogen which becomes the default texture of the embryo's brain. Problem arises when mother's body delays the supply of testosterone the male signal, due to abnormalities caused by trauma, poor nutrition or medication. In such circumstances, even the male fetus develops a female brain. If a female fetus receives testosterone, it develops a male brain. These neuron connections and brain develop the same way for rest of the life. This is the Brain gender.

Finally, comes the time when the fetus develops sexual organs. This is the Physiological gender. Sometimes, pregnancy abnormalities lead to the new born having ambiguous organs, both male and female organs or wrong organs. At times, these change with the child growth and at times they don't and are accompanied by endocrine (hormonal) dysfunctions; then the organs have to be cosmetically created. Moving further there are social and parental grooming that gives a child its initial gender identity, this is the Psychological gender.

Interestingly, functional sexuality is the combination of these and the one that prevails taking all these influences in mind. Although biological gender can be easily found out and corrected if need be, genetic and brain gender can not be corrected because they are as much a part of an individual as are the colour of our eyes, hair, skin and allergies. In the end no one can decide the sexuality but for an individual alone. It is beyond an individual's control to manipulate sexuality. It all depends on and as to what are you comfortable with and nothing else. For all we know that most people might not be perfectly male or female. It is important that early in adolescence gender identity or one's sexuality is determined, accepted and endorsed. Suppression of various flavors of sexualities tend to create psychological barriers and disorders.
